How much caffeine is in decaf coffee?

In the United States federal regulations require that in order to label coffee as "decaffeinated" that coffee must have had its caffeine level reduced by no less than 97.5 percent.

Example: Panamanian coffee is about 1.36% caffeine by weight normally. This and many other arabica coffees are about 98.64% caffeine free even before anything is done to lower the caffeine content..

When 97% of the caffeine has been removed only .0408 % of the coffee weight is caffeine. About 4/100ths of 1%. At this level it is labeled "decaffeinated. How roasters label their products is another matter. Suppose two roasters roast Panama coffee that originally came from the same lot, and were decaffeinated together in the same vat. One roaster labels his decaf. "97.5% Caffeine Removed." The other says his is "99+% Caffeine Free." Which roaster is not telling the truth?

The answer is: They are both right. They are both essentially saying the same thing.

Decaf should range somewhere in the 2-4 milligrams of caffeine per cup range.

Currently used solvents for decaffeinating coffee include, H2O (water), CO2 (Carbon Dioxide), Meth. Chloride, Ethyl Acetate. Note: A relatively new method called Swiss Water Decaffeinated uses "flavor-charged" water in the decaffeinating process.

Slight Headache Issue

I also suffer from caffeine withdraw headaches. It's strange because I don't drink regular coffee because of my GERD issues. But today, for the first time ever, I thought I would try decaf just because I love the smell of coffee and before my GERD was diagnosed, I did enjoy a good cup of Joe. Decaf tastes burnt to me, and now I don't feel well just the same as with normal coffee. I won't be drinking coffee or high caffinated tea again.

I also suffer from GERD and recently needed to cut regular coffee out of my diet.  I am going to try a couple of the decaf brands that another user recommended and see what I think though.

"I have never liked decaf, but since getting my Keurig, I've found several very good brands nd flavors.  Timothy's Columbian Decaf is terrific as well as Green Mountain Decaf Hazelnut (and I hate haselnut.)  Good Luck."

Although I love coffee and

Although I love coffee and caffeinated drinks, I recently discoverd that by drinking coffee in the morning, it was reason for excessive my tiredness and lethargy later in the day. If you get bouts of tiredness through the day, consider quitting coffee for 30 days - You'll be pleasantly surprised!

PM lethargy

I too tried this with similar results. However I have a theory that it's not actually having the coffee in the morning that makes you tired in the afternoon - since coffee dehydrates the body, if we fail to replenish the lost water we will feel tired. You can test this ... The next time you feel tired in the PM try drinking a glass of two of water - you will be surprised just how awake you begin to feel shortly after.

An apple is actually more

An apple is actually more effective at wakeing you up in the morning than that cup of coffee and its healthier for you. If you're having trouble waking up, try snaking on an apple!

Sex is actually more, than an apple

Sex with or without a partner will wake you up more than an apple, but neither is better than coffee.

Sex is actually more, than an apple

Actually, that is wrong. Once a human has an orgasm, the body has expended a tremendous amount of energy just to do that. I always feel weak and tired. As for the COFFEE, yes, Coffee dehydrates the body and once the caffiene leaves the body, there is a weary effect. Remember, Caffiene is like Amphetamines which are stimulants.

This is absolutely true. I

This is absolutely true. I had to give up my beloved coffee during a gastrointestinal diagnostic period, and i was better able to get out of bed in the morning and go to bed at night when i was off the caffeine roller coaster. Also, since I've been pregnant i find my sleep patterns are interrupted only about as much or less than when i drink a lot of coffee...pretty good for the exhaustion period of first trimester! (Though I will say, the tiredness with pregnancy is true... My sleep needs increased and I listened to my body!)

I quite drinking my two cups

I quite drinking my two cups of regular coffee every morning and drink two cups of decaf instead, because I had high blood pressure. I also stopped eating salt, that was the hard part. But now my blood pressure is low and I am happy that I don't have to take medicine for it, yet. Decaf smells and tastes almost as good.
